The mouth of the Sosua River has been a huge source of pollution for many years, so much so that the international famous hotel called "Sand Castle" has it has closed its doors because it must handle the huge emissions of all of the garbage that ends up on the beach.
The beach is no longer a beach but a large conglomeration of trash.
The coast is littered with plastic waste, televisions, washing machines and other trash. Rats, mosquitoes and odor prevent tourism. Despite the goodwill of the local government, very little done to solve this great international problem and protect this unimaginable natural resource.
Atlantic ocean pollution is obviously not a national problem, but there has been considerable international interest in the Dominican Republic to keep the rivers clean.
The second danger is that corals are being severely damaged by pollution and have almost completely disappeared in the mouth of the Sosua River. The dramatic reduction in coral population means a possible hurricane in the Category 4-5 range will cause extreme damage along the north coast, whereas before, the coral reefs offered some protection.
It is important to start this project early because the government and other individuals have big plans to develop this beautiful area. Only through education, support and by offering solutions that will eliminate contamination of this river can these development projects hope for any success.
