GOALS

The Ecological Society-Cabarete Sosua-Montellano (SOMONCA) Inc. is a nonprofit institution, created under Act 520 of 1920 and its amendments, adopted and approved at # 184,786. SOMONCA has its registered office in the Residencial Casa Linda #16, Sosua, Puerto Plata R.D.

Mission.-
Promote actions for sustainable development through environmental protection, management and conservation of natural resources.

General Purpose
Contribute to achieving environmental benefits from promising initiatives based on community support to improve living conditions through action and conservation of biodiversity, reduction of adverse impacts to the environment and protecting international waters.

Specific objectives
Promote the conservation of surface water, rivers, creeks, and endangered species, and protect the watersheds and aquifers upon which they depend. Protect reefs, corals and marine species endangered in coastal areas. Promote and support research, education and training that contributes to the protection of the environment. Manage technical and financial assistance to help with projects related to sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. Promote social and economic activities that contribute to the cleaning of solid waste, gaseous emissions or any other contaminants that affect or cause extermination of human, animal or plant life.

PROGRAMS

Education.-Our educational programs are directed to promoting environmental protection through courses, lectures and workshops. They focus on strategically critical areas affected by the implementation of projects linked to the objectives of the institution.

Ecological Orientation Program (TV).-This television program is broadcast by a local channel. Its subject is oriented to the dissemination of documentaries and scientific information, interviews and reports related to the degradation of biodiversity.

Reforestation.-Protection of rivers, creeks and their watersheds, forest conservation and production of trees to reforest critical areas, giving priority to native plants in the area.

Research.- This program is aimed at the identification and investigation of different types of fishes, birds, reptiles and trees endemic to the area that are endangered.

Organizational Structure

The General Assembly of Partners meets twice a year to elect the board of directors, who occupy the roles of president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and three members also elect a disciplinary committee comprised of three members.

The Board appoints an Executive Director and technical and administrative staff, defines the programs and projects developed, and participates in the preparation, review and approval of projects.

Administration and Resource Management

SOMONCA is channeling financial resources from donations from individuals, companies and national and international institutions to identified programs. The resources are managed through a fund accounting system.
