SOMONCA is a private non-profit ecological Foundation. It was founded in city of Sosúa province of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The ecological Foundation is legally recognized and approved by the Dominican Government, according to the ministerial decision No. 184786 date 30.01.2005.
The Caribbean Islands are threatened by deforestation, pollution of surface water and groundwater. Many indigenous species of animal and plant species are on the verge of disappearing, there are over-exploited and the coral reefs are heavily affected by the pollution and tourism.
The purpose of the ecological Foundation SOMONCA is the Community (people, businesses, and Governments) on this point to environmental threats and in cooperation with these groups to combat these threats.
The members of SOMONCA Foundation are organizing information courses, TV and radio programs about the threats to the environment. Putting collaborations on the goal of keep the surface water and to clean and prevent pollution of groundwater. Legislation seeks to stimulate that goes against overfishing and the flora and fauna protected.
The Foundation has set up SOMONCA own plants and trees nursery that has the ability to endangered areas in the Dominican Republic and Haiti reforesting. It also has a nursery for fruit trees that are deployed with poor communities to harvest fruit making a welcome addition to the daily diet. Furthermore, fast growing trees grown for the production of wood for houses construction and the production of charcoal. Many families in the Dominican Republic and Haiti are too poor to use butane gas. With this planting of fast-growing trees will prevent further deforestation. It is also important that all these activities generate additional jobs. With the high unemployment in the Caribbean is an important contribution to the improvement of the environment.
